Parish Plan steering Group= Annual Parish meeting report 2010-2011.  – Mrs S Taylor.

Since the launch of the Village Plan in March 2009 the main objective of the Steering Group has been to monitor progress against the Action Plan and seek to carry out its objectives. In particular, the SG members have continued to work towards improving village amenities and the lives of those who live here. There are currently 14 Members and full SG meetings are held several times a year. Most action is initiated by small action groups who then report back.

One of the purposes of the Village Plan was to enable the two villages of Granby and Sutton to seek outside funding for village amenities. This year Steering Group Members have negotiated an award of grant aid from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme and RBC Community Awards Scheme. The total cost of the scheme was approximately £30,000 and the work was completed in December 2010. Particular thanks go to Carola Jones, Philip Straw and Andrea Jex.

In addition the SG Members have:

  • produced and circulated Welcome Packs to new residents of Granby & Sutton
  • run a completion for a new village sign, which it is hoped will be erected during 2011. A successful funding application has been made to NCC LIS for this purpose.
  • Initiated improvements to the G & S village website.
  • attended meetings with representatives from Barnstone and Langar regarding the opening of a community shop.
  • funded community speed watch signs costing £137, as part of a joint venture with neighbouring villages.

All of the initiatives arising as a direct or indirect result of the Village Plan continue to prosper. The clubs and social activities are still well attended and supported. The Produce Show is developing into an annual highlight and Granby & Sutton residents have a thriving range of social activities, thanks to the support of residents and the hard work and commitment of a relatively small group of villagers.

However, there are areas which still require more volunteers and any suggestions for recruiting more help would be welcomed. All too often the hard work which goes into village events is undertaken by a relatively small number of people. In particular, the number of volunteers prepared to undertake speed checks has dwindled. Help and ideas for improving the appearance and road safety of the villages would also be welcome.

There is still a strong interest in the possible provision of a new sports/playing field and allotments or community garden, and this is an area which it is hoped to target in the near future.

The Steering Group’s bank account currently has funds of £302.

The Steering Group is still continuing to monitor and facilitate progress on the Village Plan. Any comments or queries about the group or its activities are welcomed.
