Granby and Sutton parish is mid way between Nottingham and Grantham two miles south of Bingham and the A52 trunk road. The villages of Granby and Sutton are one mile apart in the flat Vale of Belvoir . The land was once part of the estate of the Duke of Rutland who still resides at Belvoir Castle, close by. The parish is part of Rushcliffe Borough, based in West Bridgford, Nottingham

There are approximately 150 properties in the two villages. All Saints Church dates back to the 11^th Century and stands in a closed churchyard in the centre of Granby. It consists of a nave, chancel, tower and vestry. The six bells provide a distinctively beautiful peal.

Granby, which is a designated conservation area, still has two popular public houses – the ‘Boot and Shoe’ and the ‘Marquis of Granby’. The Village Hall (formerly the Village School) which serves both villages is the only community hall. It is a Victorian building with fairly high maintenance requirements. It also has a small play area at the rear but this is not well equipped and not well suited to ball games.

There are no shops in Granby or Sutton. The only provisions that can be purchased are alcohol from the pubs or eggs from the garage! There is a vehicle repairs garage and MoT station. Most children under 11 years travel by bus to attend Orston Primary School.

Secondary age pupils attend Toot Hill School at Bingham; Grantham Girls’ or Kings High School for Boys’ in Grantham or the Nottingham High Schools.

We have now had three well attended meetings of a group of enthusiastic residents and have made good progress in planning events for the weekend of 2nd to 5th June 2012.

Examples of some of the events are: Ceilidh and bar at the Paddock Granby on Saturday 2nd June; Bonfire and fireworks on Monday evening 4th June; special church service and bell ringing on Sunday 3rd June; street parties and children’s entertainment on Monday afternoon 4th June; Royal Scarecrow competition over the entire holiday period. There will be another meeting in Granby Village Hall on Wednesday 7th March at 7.30pm. The meeting will last one hour. Everyone welcome and all offers of help gratefully received.

Granby and Sutton Gardening Club staged its 3rd Annual Home Produce Show on Saturday 10^th September in the village hall. The show has become well established in the local diary and attracts much interest and healthy competitive spirit. Entries were received for 22 of the 23 classes that reflected the diverse interests of adults, children, gardeners, cooks, flower lovers and photographers.

Classes ranged from unusual shaped vegetables to wildlife photographs and home baking, sloe gin and flower arrangements in a cup and saucer.Once again the event proved popular with entrants and observers alike. Refreshments were served all day and included delicious home made cakes. The judging took place in the afternoon and certificates and prizes were awarded to the successful entrants. This year was memorable for the high number of Sutton winners so the gauntlet is thrown down for Granby residents at next year’s event.

The next Garden Club events are gardening talks by Tracey Akehust on Tuesday 1 Nov and Don Whitton on Tuesday 6^th December at 7.30pm in the Village Hall

Almost 200 people attended the recent Granby and Sutton Summer BBQ event. The weather was incredible and stayed warm until after the sun went down.

The music was provide by Trio Gitan, a local group who played a lively set of jazz and swing that perfectly complemented the summer sunshine.

As usual, Loz and Su provided a superb bar including three real ales and jugs of Pimms. The children made the most of the bouncy castle (provided by Lee at Mousy Browns).

There were also face painting and impromptu football matches breaking out in the paddocks.

The venue proved to be perfect for the size of the event and our thanks to Rick and Michael for allowing us to use their paddock. Meat for the BBQ was kindly provided by Alan (Butcher’s Block, Radcliffe) and Aidie. Thanks to Scott and Aidie for their expert cooking, ably assisted by Barbara. Anna, Angie and Kiran did a stalwart job cooking and serving chips all night

The raffle proved popular with great prizes donated by local businesses. Judging by the smile on everyone’s faces they thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Here’s to the next one.

Once again residents came up trumps with a diverse and creative collection of scarecrows that brightened up Granby and Sutton for a week in July. This year the theme was films and entries included characters from horror, comedy, science fiction and musicals. The number of entries was down slightly on last year but the quality was just as apparent.

The judging took place on the 12^th July and prizes were awarded at the village barbeque on the same date. The winning entry, for the second year running, was the Hickling family with Harry Potter in Sutton. Mary Moulds was runner up with her Mary Poppins scarecrow.
